What goes into military pay

Military compensation starts with three building blocks. Basic pay is set by your pay grade and years of service from the DoD pay table. BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) is set annually for each Military Housing Area — this calculator looks up the 2026 rate from your duty ZIP code and dependency status. BAS (Basic Allowance for Subsistence) is a flat monthly food allowance: $476.95 for enlisted members and $328.48 for officers in 2026.

Why allowances matter

BAH and BAS are not taxed, so a side-by-side comparison with a civilian salary understates military take-home pay. Members living in government quarters generally don't receive BAH — use the toggles above to match your situation.

What this estimate leaves out

Special and incentive pays (sea pay, flight pay, submarine pay), bonuses, COLA, taxes, TSP contributions, and deductions like SGLI. For official figures, check your LES in myPay and the DFAS pay tables.

FAQs

How is military monthly pay calculated?

Monthly pay is basic pay for your grade and years of service, plus Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) if you live off base or in private housing, plus Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS). Special pays, bonuses, taxes, and deductions are separate.

How is BAH determined?

BAH depends on your duty station ZIP code, pay grade, and whether you have dependents. Every ZIP code maps to a Military Housing Area (MHA), and each MHA has a rate table set annually by the Defense Travel Management Office. This calculator uses the 2026 rates.

What are the 2026 BAS rates?

For 2026, BAS is $476.95 per month for enlisted members and $328.48 for officers (warrant officers receive the officer rate). BAS is a flat, non-taxable allowance that does not vary by location or years of service.

Is BAH or BAS taxed?

No. BAH and BAS are non-taxable allowances. Only basic pay (and most special pays) are subject to federal income tax, which is one reason military take-home pay is higher than the gross number suggests.

Why is the estimate different from my LES?

This tool estimates pre-tax pay from published tables. Your Leave and Earnings Statement reflects special pays, TSP contributions, SGLI, taxes, mid-month splits, and any corrections. Always verify against myPay and DFAS.
